CHAMPAIGN--The Parkland College Art and Design Student Juried Exhibition is an annual presentation of selected student art works. Faculty within the Art and Design program jury the works, and many awards are selected from out of approximately 400 entries. This exhibition provides an educational experience for students in preparation for professional careers in art and is considered an essential part of the academic experience. Juried exhibitions are standard procedure for group art shows at universities, museums, and other art organizations. This show is a good opportunity for the students to see their work outside the classroom and in the context of other art mediums. “It is a great time for the students” said Chris Berti, “I am always impressed with the quality of work our students produce.”

A reception will be held for the artists and is open to the public on Thursday, April 12 in the Parkland Art Gallery Lounge from 6 to 8 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Awards are given in the form of Merit Awards, Purchase Awards, and an award for art supplies provided by the Art Coop. Many private individuals have generously given funds for awards and include The Parkland President Award, The David M. and Shirley A. Jones Student Art Award, The Metals Award for Jewelry/metalsmithing, The Fine and Applied Arts Chair Award, and the Parkland Art and Design Faculty Award. Two scholarships will also be presented during the awards reception and include the Don Lake Art Scholarship and the Underwood-Alger Scholarship. Awards are given for the quality of student artwork. Merit awardees, scholarship recipients, and certificate winners retain possession of their work. Purchase awards become part of the Parkland College Permanent Collection. This exhibition is open to all students who are enrolled at Parkland College and completed their artwork in the current academic year beginning with the summer of 2011. Artwork from students in Photography, Painting, Drawing, Watercolor, Metals, Sculpture, Three-Dimensional Design, Two-Dimensional Design, Color Theory, and Ceramics classes will be on display.

All events in the handicapped-accessible gallery are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday 10a.m.-3p.m., and Saturday, 12 noon-2 p.m.

On Friday, April 20, the Parkland Art Gallery will feature a special exhibit, observed in support of the Boneyard Arts Festival. Come and enjoy “Standing Room Only”, a temporary exhibit featuring an installation of chair sculptures by Parkland College 3D Design students, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This exhibit includes a live remote from Parkland’s WPCD-FM, giveaways, refreshments, and other activities. Vote on your favorite chair and enter to win prizes!

To find the gallery when classes are in session, we suggest using the M parking lots. Enter through any door and follow the ramps uphill to the highest point, where the gallery is located. The gallery windows overlook the outdoor fountain area. This exhibit is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, A state agency.
