The Parkland College Graphic Design Student Show will be on display at the Giertz Gallery Monday, May 15 through Thursday, June 1. A reception honoring the students will be held Wednesday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery lounge with an awards ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m.

As with all events in the handicapped-accessible gallery, the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The juried exhibit highlights work completed by students in the current academic year, beginning with summer 2016. Parkland Graphic Design and Interactive Design faculty jury the show and select the most imaginative, inspiring, distinctive, innovative, unusual and memorable pieces for display in the gallery. Then local industry professionals are invited to judge the show and select the awards. This year’s judges are Maria Ludeke, Design Studio Manager at Neutral Design Studio and Ralph Roether, Graphic Designer at Champaign Park District.

Works in the exhibit showcase creative solutions to design problems presented to students in Parkland’s Graphic Design, Interactive Design and Illustration studio classes. Expect to see traditional print media, motion graphics, logos, branding, packaging, menus, books, publications, posters, brochures, websites, video and illustration.

"As digital media takes over the world, designers have to respond to new trends," says professor Paul Young, Parkland's Graphic Design Program Director. "To succeed in today's competitive world, students need to learn every trick in the book and be comfortable working in print as well as on screens, be able to communicate visually and verbally, be able to harness the power of motion and interactivity, and be able to solve marketing problems, too. That's a pretty tall order for a two-year program, but our students are rising to the challenge."

During the May 17 reception, an awards ceremony honoring 2017 Graphic Design student achievements will take place at 6 p.m. "Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they see their work professionally displayed in the gallery," says graphic design instructor Liza Wynette. "It gives them the opportunity to show friends and family the results of their diligence during the past academic year."

Immediately after the awards ceremony, graphic design instructor Liza Wynette will give a gallery talk and guided tour of the exhibition. In an informal Q&A with select award winners, Liza will go behind the scenes and reveal how Parkland's Graphic Design and Interactive Design programs teach creative problem solving and design thinking.  Parkland College is one of the few community colleges in the US that offers a series of professional illustration courses. Students who take these hands-on studio art courses leave the class with functional commercial art samples for their portfolio.


Giertz Gallery summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. To find the Gallery when classes are in session, use the M6 parking lot on the north corner of the campus. Enter through door X-7, turn left, and follow the ramps uphill to the highest point of the first floor, where the gallery is located.

Eligibility
Open to all artists 18 years and older residing in Champaign County and counties within the Parkland College 505 District including Ford,
Coles, Champaign, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Iroquois, Livingston, Moultrie, McLean and Vermilion. All work must be original and not previously exhibited at the Giertz Gallery. Work completed under an instructor’s supervision is not eligible. Only works completed since January 2014 will be accepted. The juror will make all final determinations.

Media
Submitted works may be in the following disciplines: painting, sculpture, ceramics, metals, drawing, printmaking, photography, textiles, video, and mixed media. Due to space limitations, accepted video will be shown on a computer monitor. No installation art accepted due to space restrictions.

Specifications
Size: Works including frames should not exceed 36 × 36 × 36.  

Work must be completely assembled and exhibition ready. All works on paper must be matted or mounted and framed. Frames should be wired or have D-rings (no sawtooth hangers). Unframed paintings are acceptable but must have a finished edge and be ready to hang.

Work requiring special handling or installation will be accepted only at the gallery’s discretion. Giertz Gallery has the right to exclude any artwork that has the potential to damage the facility, other artwork, or the public. Any artwork that does not meet the above guidelines will not be accepted for exhibition.

Jury Instructions
Jurying will be conducted through online submission. No mailed applications will be accepted.

Digital Images
Giertz Gallery requests digital images in 300 dpi – 4 × 6 (1200 × 1800 pixels) – jpeg file format. Images should be named using the following format: LastName_FirstName_Submission#.JPG (example: Kahlo_Frida_1.JPG)

Entry Fee
A $20 jury fee entitles each artist to submit a maximum of three artworks. Each 3D work entry may have one detail image. Due to size restrictions of the gallery, only one piece per artist will be accepted. All fees are nonrefundable and payable by credit card at time of online submission.

Liability
Works will be handled with the utmost care. Giertz Gallery will provide insurance coverage for damage or loss only while in the possession of the gallery. The amount of coverage will be limited to the repair or replacement value, as stated by the artist on the loan form.

Written authorization is required for the Giertz Gallery to release work to anyone other than the artist. If you are unable to pick up your work during the pickup times, you may indicate a proxy who will do this for you in advance by notifying the gallery director. Your proxy must provide a valid picture ID. Artwork left with the Giertz Gallery more than 30 days after the close of the exhibition is deemed abandoned and will be discarded.

Agreement
Submitting an entry to this show constitutes agreement with all conditions of this show. Giertz Gallery at Parkland College assumes the right to photograph accepted artwork for publicity or catalog purposes. Giertz Gallery at Parkland College reserves the right to reject works accepted by the juror that have been inaccurately represented by the image, and reserves the right to reject works from exhibition that are deemed extraordinarily fragile or unstable. All accepted work must remain for the duration of the show.

Sales
Exhibited works available for sale will be sold at the price indicated on the entry form with the artist receiving 70% and the Giertz Gallery receiving 30%. Works not for sale should be listed “NFS,” but a value must be stated for insurance purposes.

Notification
Artists will be notified of their acceptance via email provided by the artist on the submission form.  Please see calendar for notification date.

Parkland College's Art and Design Student Juried Exhibition for 2017 will be held April 10 through May 6 in the Giertz Gallery.

Audiences will enjoy an impressive body of student work in photography, painting, drawing, metals, sculpture, three-dimensional design, two-dimensional design, color theory, and ceramics. Parkland Art and Design faculty will select approximately 180 works from among 350+ entries for this year's exhibit. Students taking art classes in the current academic year, beginning with summer 2016, were eligible to submit artwork. 

Many of these works earn artistic awards, which will be announced during the exhibit's opening reception Thursday, April 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery lounge. The Parkland Guitar Ensemble will provide music.

Art and design associate professor Matthew Watt is among many Parkland art and design faculty who look forward to this event each spring, along with students.

"Making art is rigorous work; it takes grit to make it happen," Watt said. "I am always impressed with what our students can accomplish." 

As students planning on a profession in the arts begin their career path at Parkland, this exhibition allows them to showcase their extensive talent as well as the exploration processes they have experienced throughout their studies in art and design, according to gallery director Lisa Costello. 

"It introduces them to professional practices they will encounter in their field as well, such as working with a gallery, preparing their work for exhibition, and engaging in the jurying process that is essential for an emerging artist," Costello said. "This is a necessary component for resume building and establishing themselves as practicing artists once they graduate or transfer to a four-year college." 

During the April 13 reception, an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. will recognize students whose artwork shows remarkable distinction. Student artists will receive monetary awards including the Parkland President Award, the David M. and Shirley A. Jones Student Art Award, the Metals Award for Jewelry/Metalsmithing, the Fine and Applied Arts Chair Award, the Parkland Art and Design Faculty Award, and the Blair Kling Memorial Art Award. In addition to these awards, there will also be an Art Coop Award for Sustained Studio Excellence, which allows students to purchase art supplies. 

Parkland Art and Design students are eligible to earn scholarships, which are also announced during the reception; these include the Don Lake Art Scholarship, the Underwood-Alger Scholarship, and the Robert Ralph Ford Memorial Art Scholarship. Finally, the winner of the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts Scholarship will be announced.

Merit awardees, scholarship recipients, and certificate winners retain possession of their work, while purchase awards become part of the Parkland College Student Art Collection. 

Exhibit Sneak Peek

In addition to the reception and award festivities, the college will hold a Boneyard Arts Festival Sneak Peek of the new exhibit on Friday, April 7, 2­6 p.m. 

"It is great to be a part of the county-wide celebration that 40 North, the Champaign County Arts Council, organizes each year," she said.
